I found this article to be interesting. The author provides a list of the 50 books she believes children should read. I'm not an expert in children's books (although I remember enough of my own childhood reading to know that I read a fair portion of these) -- I'm curious about the opinions of others with a little more experience in books for their children. The list feels a little PC to me, but then again I wouldn't expect much less from the source.
Good list? Bad list? Do you have a different list?
Now I sound like Dr Seuss...

Tales from Shakespeare!? For under FIVE?!
She wasted some numbers, in my opinion. While I like Boyton, I would also put her books in the "flashing lights and noise making" books. Cute stuff, kids love them, but not classics.
At least Anne of Green Gables made the list. ;)
Apparently The Gruffalo is known by many. We just bought a copy which arrived in the mail yesterday and now I feel a bit self-conscious that I had never heard of it before until recently.
I think she missed a GREAT many classics and clearly her choices were influenced by the likes and dislikes of her son. Not that that is unreasonable. It just doesn't make the list very authoritative in my opinion. I could say that the Fidgety Fish books are A Must but they aren't likely to become classics.
Great points! And I certainly agree with Tales from Shakespeare being a bit optimistic for the under-five crowd.
